Choosing tempering temperature starts with the quenching result

“What tempering temperature for this steel?” requires more than a number. Temperature must suit the material, prior treatment and required hardness, toughness and dimensional stability.

Tempering is not a universal remedy for insufficient core cooling, major microstructure differences or cracks introduced during quenching. Verify the as-quenched condition before setting subsequent treatment.

Why one grade name does not give one temperature

Heat chemistry, effective section, heated condition and cooling affect as-quenched structure and hardness. Mill tempering-response curves also carry material and treatment conditions. Similar international grades are not automatically identical.

Tempering also involves holding time, number of cycles and cooling. Some alloy systems show secondary hardening, so hardness does not necessarily decrease monotonically with increasing tempering temperature for every material.

Prepare these details before setting the next process

Information Why it matters
Grade and heat chemistry Identify the applicable material and process guidance
Heating and holding records before quenching Establish material condition and treatment history
Dimensions and actual cooling history Identify heavy sections and differences between locations
As-quenched hardness distribution and microstructure Confirm the starting condition, not just one surface value
Drawing and service-property requirements Establish final acceptance targets

With these records, the user’s process specialists set tempering according to material guidance, product specifications and validation results.

Anran focuses on getting quench cooling right

AR-HCCI coordinates high- and low-temperature cooling of high-chromium cast iron. AR-SAG and suitable operating conditions address heavy Cr–Mo steel liner sections. SYQ-2 assesses the medium; internal measurement records actual cooling for comparison with post-quench inspection.

Our focus remains quench cooling and the as-quenched condition, providing workpiece evidence for the user’s subsequent tempering process. Quenchants, testers and internal measurement products are independently available; one integrated package is not required.

If the current problem is in quenching

If the core is soft, hardness varies by location or you need better coordination of specialised quenchant and cooling, tell Anran the workpiece and symptoms. Share test results if available; uploading complete data is not required to make contact.
